Career/Job Resources

Job Resources

For the convenience of our visitors, we have listed a large number of popular job list/search websites. C4IOE does not receive anything from these websites for listing them here. C4IOE does not endorse or does not necessarily agree with or promote any of the content or actions contained on these sites, but we merely provide the links as a convenience to our visitors. (See further below after Networking).

Reader’s Digest for March 2009 also has a great series of articles on Job Search topics and many links to career websites and resources. Topics include: What to Do When You Lose Your Job, How to Find a New Job, 9 Recession-Proof Careers, Career Expert Offers Advice to 6 People Out of Work. http://www.rd.com/advice-and-know-how/what-to-do-when-you-lose-your-job/article118930.html

Networking
It has been proven through research that most jobs still come from people you know or who have met through your networks.  So, we recommend that job-seekers continue to network, go on information gathering meetings, etc.  Today with social networking, it has become easier to "get the word out" about what job/career you're seeking.  Here are some tips:
  • Use the social networking opportunities, tools & technology that exist.  There are a variety (these are a few, but they are not promoted/endorsed by C4IOE):  LinkedIN, Spoke, MySpace, Facebook.  Use these opportunities to let people know what type of jobs you're seeking.  Be careful if you're currently employed as employers do regularly view social networking sites to research their employees.  For job-seekers, remember to keep your information on social networking sites as professional and mature, or at a minimum, non-offensive as possible.  Potential employers also check out these sites and many have not hired potential candidates because of what's on these sites (and on personal web-pages).
  • As you are networking with people, remember these things:
    • Don't ask the person that you're networking with for a job if you've told them that you just want to do an informational interview with them.  They'll feel a bit like it's bait & switch.
    • Use the informational interview/networking meeting to ask them about their career, the organization, trends and other contacts with whom you can network.  Share a bit about your career interests.  Don't monopolize the conversation.
    • Networking is a two-way street.  You should try to provide something information-wise to the person with whom you network.  Maybe it's something you found in your recent research, or a business lead/contact for them, or a trend you've studied, etc.  If you can leave them with a bit of information that might be helpful to them as well, then it's an equally beneficial meeting, and they're more likely to meet with you again down the road and more likely to be willing to recommend that you speak to others they know.
    • Follow up with any leads/contacts provided by others.  If you decide not to network with someone that has been given to you by another person, let that provider of the contact know that you won't be contacting their contact and why.
    • Be sure to thank anyone with whom you speak - write a thank you note.  Handwritten or typed and mailed preferably.  At the least, write an email thank you.  People remember this.  And they're more likely to meet with you down the road if you took the time to thank them.  You may get a job, but then 5 years down the road, lose the job or want to move onto something else.  And you may want to network again with the person that you had networked with previously.
Human Resources, Training & Development and Consulting Jobs
We also have several RSS feeds set up for human resources, training & development and consulting jobs. (See the column to the right). We often hear from people looking for consulting-related jobs or from our Clients who are looking to find candidates in a specific field.
